The 12 Gifts of Christmas: Day 4

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Micah 5:2,4

Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1-2

The Fourth Gift of Christmas: Anticipation

Few things in life stir up excitement and anticipation within us quite like Christmas. From no school to chocolate chip cookies to presents, Christmas is the ultimate childhood dream. As we move along in life, that same anticipation lingers. In a season in which we gather for parties, think about the special people in our lives, and, Lord-willing!, send that annual update in the form of a photo card to friends and family, Christmas is brimming with expectation.

While you and I revel in the spirit of the hHoliday, have we often enough slowed down to ask why? Do we question the good vibes or seek to know their origin? I suspect Christmas is such a magical time by divine invention.

Jesus’ birth was the fulfillment of a promise made hundreds of years before. This tiny baby Messiah had been anticipated by so many for so long. Even as His birth took place, three wisemen noticed a strange star in the sky. With the profoundly ingrained expectation that this star would lead them to the King they had so long awaited, they too took action in the spirit of hope.

But this wasn’t just any expectation. This was anticipation and excitement over what the three men expected God to do.

This season, are you expecting God to move in your life or the lives of others? Can you put aside your hectic holiday schedule long enough to remember that our expectation and excitement begins with Him?

This Christmas, start looking for the many ways God is moving around you and then, intentionally allow Him to move through you. Consider gifting a family in need with seeds for a garden, a cow for milk, meat and income or any other number of blessings you can send through the BGR Gift Catalog. Do so with the conviction that God is going to move in mighty ways, just like He did on that very first Christmas night.

Prayer

Lord, in this season of happiness and joy, help me remember that these feelings begin with you. Lord, I’m trusting you to move in my heart this holiday. I’m asking you to help me live and celebrate this season with joyful anticipation of all you will do around me, within me and through me. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your endless bounty and infinite promise.
