BGR partners in the Bahamian capital city of Nassau received word that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has recorded nearly 5,000 evacuees seeking shelter after having their homes destroyed.

It is estimated that another 1,650 victims who were not able to evacuate to other islands are still seeking shelter. Most of these families are coming from Central Abaco, where the damage was most devastating.

As of Thursday, September 12, additional emergency response teams have landed and will continue the hard work of helping rehabilitate the affected communities. Further long-term action plans are being designed in partnership with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief network and local partners.
