Hurricane Dorian Update: September 20

HURRICANE DORIAN UPDATE: Due to the tireless work of humanitarian agencies and disaster response teams on the ground, most Bahamians in need have received assistance as of September 15.

In the capital of Nassau, 16 different shelters are providing food, water, and medical care to over 2,000 evacuees.

BGR is leading the emergency response on behalf of the IMB and SBC churches by partnering with the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention’s churches and disaster relief branch. Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) teams have also joined BGR partners in:

1. Purchasing and distributing food to evacuees
2. Supplying women and children with hygiene kits
3. Mobilizing the Bahamian Convention’s trained counselors and chaplains
4. Sending blankets, tarps, and other needed goods to churches in Grand Bahama

BGR is still working on finalizing partnerships between 13 Bahamian churches and state Baptist conventions in order to better care for these hurting congregations. Remaining response teams continue to work on repairing homes and churches, cleaning up debris, and engaging survivors in trauma healing workshops.

1. The Bahamian government would know how to best serve the most impacted islands
2. Partnerships with local churches would prove beneficial in their recovery
3. The various SBDR, IMB, and BGR teams would coordinate efforts effectively
4. Families who lost loved ones and livelihoods would experience the peace of Christ
